Microneedling
Microneedling is one of the latest and most advanced minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation treatments available at our practice. Also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy, or CIT, this state-of-the-art technique is designed to help the skin renew itself from the inside out, stimulating the production of new collagen to address a number of common skin conditions. Microneedling from our board-certified plastic surgeon—John M. Sarbak, MD—can be an ideal option for many individuals who would like to reduce signs of age and skin damage without the need for major surgery and extended recovery times.
What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?
Microneedling offers a variety of benefits for both women and men looking to renew the appearance of their skin. The potential advantages of this treatment include:
- Reduction in signs of mild to moderate wrinkles
- Reduction in signs of large pores
- Improvement of areas affected by discoloration/hyperpigmentation
- Improvement of skin texture and tone
- Improvement of skin laxity
- Reduction in the appearance of mild scarring
- Improvement of areas affected by stretch marks
- Reduction in signs of sun damage
Microneedling can be a very effective treatment on its own, and can also serve as a complement to procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, or dermal fillers for a more complete makeover. Dr. Sarbak can talk with you about your options and help you determine if microneedling is the best treatment for your unique needs and goals.
What Does Microneedling Involve?
If you are a good candidate for microneedling, a customized treatment plan will be created to address your individual concerns. Microneedling involves the use of an advanced device similar in size to a pen. This device will be precisely guided over the areas of skin targeted for treatment. Once applied, it will make very small punctures in the skin, creating what’s known as “micro-channels.” These perforations allow the skin to naturally repair and renew itself, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin fibers while enhancing circulation. The process initiated by microneedling can ultimately diminish the appearance of wrinkles and scars, create more even pigmentation, enhance skin firmness, and generally provide the skin with a healthier and smoother look.
Microneedling can typically be performed right here at our office in under an hour, depending on the size and number of treatment areas. A topical anesthetic can be applied to the areas being treated to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible during the procedure.
Will I Need Recovery Time After Microneedling?
Depending on the extent of treatment, most patients are able to resume normal daily routines immediately after the microneedling procedure. Some level of redness in the targeted areas can be expected for a few days. This effect is rather like a mild sunburn, and is usually followed by some dryness and peeling in the area. Over the next two to four weeks, patients typically begin seeing signs of improvement, with the results continuing to improve in the next three months as new collagen and elastin replenish and renew the skin.
Depending on the extent and severity of the skin condition being treated, a series of microneedling treatments will likely be recommended to yield the best possible results. These treatment sessions are typically staged from four to six weeks apart. Once your skin has been evaluated, you will find out how many treatments may be necessary to attain your goals.
Microneedling is becoming a popular option for women and men who would like to enhance their appearance without the downtime associated with more invasive procedures.
